In Key Region Leiden, knowledge from top institutions is making its way into society in three areas: bioscience, space andautonomous tech (drones). It is a unique working ecosystem with the highest knowledge density in the Netherlands in as many as eight key technologies. This is where science changes the world.
Entrepreneurs – from startups to multinationals – are working with governments, knowledge institutions and education on today’s strategic challenges and tomorrow’s solutions.
- The Leiden Bio Science Park is working on innovations at the intersection of vaccines, regenerative medicine, data and AI, medical technology and lifestyle prevention.
- Through NL Space Campus, satellite data are being used for applications such as Earth observation, climate monitoring and communications.
- At Unmanned Valley, autonomous tech is being developed for medical logistics, sustainable agriculture and security of (critical) infrastructure, among other things.

Accelerating innovation in unique eco-system
Key Region Leiden is buzzing with energy. Of positivity and pioneering developments around key enabling technologies. Collaboration is key at all levels.
- Active efforts are being made to improve the startup and scale-up climate, innovation and crossovers between the knowledge clusters.
- Space for work is essential. Improving business parks for well-functioning SMEs and a strong local economy is a priority.
- Entrepreneurs are supported with programs for digitization and innovation.
In addition, the region, with 327,000 inhabitants, is a great place to live and work: centrally located with Leiden City of Discoveries as its pearl, surrounded by Region of Surprises with culture, nature, beach and sea around the corner.
